When drains and sewer pipes get damaged and leak, they pose a real risk to health and create and unpleasant environment.

The prospect of carrying out major excavation to replace sections of pipe doesn’t appeal to many businesses or local authorities but there is an alternative way to get the system flowing properly again.

What causes damage to drains and sewers?

Drains and sewers are often decades old and made from earthenware pipe which is vulnerable to cracking. Drains can collapse totally under increased ground pressure from recent building work and tree roots can also damage and invade drains and sewers.

Benefits of no-dig technology

Re-lining, also known as ‘no-dig’ or ‘trenchless’ technology, places a new joint free pipe within the existing damaged pipe.

Benefits include:

  • Minimal surface, disruption to traffic, local dwellers, employees or facility users
  • Minimal impact on the environment
  • Reduces cost and saves time

How relining is done

As the name implies, there’s no need to dig messy and expensive trenches. Instead, technicians install a drain lining which bonds to the inside of the damaged pipe, creating a pipe within a pipe.

This method can be used in smaller pipes, typically with diameters from 10cm to 1.5m.

First of all, the damage is located, usually with the aid of CCTV camera fitted to a remotely operated vehicle. We’ve designed and built our own lightweight vehicles that can crawl along the smallest pipes and record imagery as they go.

Once identified, the area around the compromised wall is then cleaned and descaled, usually with a high-pressure water jet.

Next, we insert a pitch fibre sleeve which is pushed onto the pipe inner surface using an inflation tube. Once the inner lining is fully cured and stuck to the pipe wall the inflation tube is removed.
