Septic Tank Compliance – General Binding Rules
With effect from 1 January 2020, greater restrictions on septic tank discharge into watercourses will be enforced by the Environment Agency. This means that if your current septic tank is causing pollution by discharging directly to a surface water pipe, ditch, stream or river, you are required to replace or upgrade your treatment system before or by the deadline.
4 Steps to Septic Tank Compliance
- Apply for a permit if you do not comply with the General Binding Rules
- Connect to a main sewer – where available
- Install a drainage field to discharge directly to the ground
- Replace your septic tank with a small sewage treatment plant to improve the quality of effluent that you discharge.
