In modern civil engineering, the integration of drainage systems with road construction is essential for ensuring long-term durability and environmental resilience.

A recent project for one of our clients illustrates how coordinated planning, qualified personnel, and appropriate equipment can deliver a complete infrastructure solution. from underground utilities to final surfacing.

The task

The project involved the construction of a 300-metre access road to a business site. The scope included full drainage installation beneath the carriageway, followed by the laying of the surface course. This type of work requires a multi-disciplinary approach, combining excavation, pipe-laying, backfilling, and surfacing within a tightly managed schedule, which we were able to provide in-house.

Technical execution

The drainage component involved the installation of subsurface infrastructure designed to manage stormwater runoff and prevent water ingress into the road base.

Proper drainage is critical in more rural settings, like this one, where surface water can accumulate rapidly and compromise road integrity.

Following drainage installation, the road was constructed using a layered approach. This typically included a sub-base of compacted aggregate, a binder course, and a final surface course of asphalt. The final surfacing was completed using mechanical paving equipment to ensure uniformity and compaction, critical for load-bearing performance and longevity.

The right equipment for the job

The roadworks relied on a range of specialised equipment:

  • Excavators and trenchers for initial groundwork and drainage trenching.
  • Pipe-laying tools and laser-guided levels to ensure correct gradient and alignment of drainage systems.
  • Bitumen paving machines and vibratory rollers for the surfacing phase, ensuring a smooth and durable finish.

In addition, we can carry out remote CCTV inspections to verify the integrity of the new drainage installation before surfacing begins.

Qualifications and compliance

Our workforce involved in projects involving roadworks and resurfacing holds certifications under the New Roads and Street Works Act (NRSWA), which governs how contractors work on public highways.

Although not needed in this case, many of our people are also qualified in confined space working, with health and safety certifications in line with Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM 2015).

These qualifications ensure that all aspects of our work, from excavation to reinstatement, are carried out safely, legally, and to the highest technical standard.

Environmental and structural considerations

In many of the developments we’re involved in, environmental impact is a key consideration for our client. Proper drainage design mitigates the risk of erosion, flooding, and waterlogging, which can affect both the road and surrounding land.

The use of recycled materials in surfacing and our water-efficient jetting systems for cleaning and maintenance also reflects a growing emphasis put on sustainability by our clients.

A complete in-house service for seamless delivery

This 300-metre road construction project demonstrates the complexity and interdependence of drainage and surfacing in civil engineering. By integrating underground infrastructure with surface-level construction, the project delivered a complete, functional roadway suitable for commercial access.

Successful completion of the job depends not only on technical skill and equipment but also on regulatory compliance and our awareness of environmental considerations.

At Drain and Sewer Services we provide groundworks services, in addition to our core drainage and sewer work. This includes the construction and resurfacing of roads, driveways, and patios.

We often integrate roadworks with underground infrastructure projects, such as drainage and water mains, allowing for a seamless completion of both surface and subsurface elements.

All work is carried out by certified engineers, with NRSWA accreditation, ensuring compliance with national standards for working on highways and in public areas. This way, we ensure that everyone on your premises – staff, customers, visitors and the general public – is kept safe at all times.
