June is here and so is the torrential rain. Just this week, with the heavy downpours, the Drain and Sewers team were out all day and night, working until the early hours of the morning clearing drains and pumping out flood water for our customers across the South East.

As we head into summer there are 101 jobs to be done, but one that probably isn’t top of the list as we look forward to hot weather is checking that drains are cleared. This, however, is the perfect time of year to do so, not only in readiness for winter but because when it comes to summer weather, it never rains but it pours.

What can happen to drains in the summer?

To ensure drains and sewers are in good working order we recommend that they are checked regularly, no matter whether they are on a commercial or residential property. As we head into the warmer weather there are particular reasons a drain inspection is a good idea:

  • Trees and vegetation grow, causing damage and disruption underground
  • Vegetation that falls into drains builds up because it’s not being washed away regularly
  • Rising summer temperatures lets bacteria and mould grow, causing smells
  • In summer drier ground becomes hard, so water runs off quicker, causing flooding

Drains and culverts need to be clear to ensure that water can flow through them quickly to prevent a build up at the surface. Checking them identifies any damaged caused over the winter months and prevents it getting worse.

Inspecting drains doesn’t mean digging up the garden

Checking your drains and sewers and repairing damage doesn’t necessarily mean digging or disruption. CCTV drain cameras can be sent through increasingly narrow bores to identify damage or blockages. Real time imagery allows a quick diagnosis of any problems and how best to resolve them. And with the right training and equipment, such as high pressured jets, this can often be done quickly.

And that’s another job off the list.
