If you are eating something, you may want to stop for the next few minutes while we talk to you about fatbergs.

In 2019 a fatberg the size of a double decker bus, weighing 40 tonnes, was cleared from a sewer in London. Not impressed? How about the 84-metre-long fatberg weighing 90 tonnes found in a Liverpool sewer?

Even though the thought of a fatberg, made from a conglomeration of fats, wet wipes, nappies and everything else you can imagine being disposed of down the drain, sounds disgusting, people’s fascination with the idea has warranted the Museum of London to display samples from a fatberg.

Grease traps that have solidified during lockdown

If you run a restaurant or pub and you’re looking forward to reopening as pandemic restrictions ease, you’re probably unlikely to find a fatberg lurking under your feet, but you could be building up a problem for the future through the fats, oils and grease escaping from your premises into the drainage system.

However, you could find yourself with an immediate problem from fats, oil and build-ups in grease traps which have accumulated or solidified during lockdown. If left unremoved, it could lead to blockages, floods and bad smells.

Fire and safety risks from fat build-up

Not only do blocked grease traps cause drainage problems, they lead to more serious hygiene issues and even a fire risk. It’s essential that grease traps are installed, regularly cleaned and repaired to prevent danger to your business and the potential of a fine for breaching environmental standards.

If you run a restaurant or pub with a kitchen where the drains have been left standing for a period, now is a good time to make sure your grease traps are clean and working.

Our team at Drain and Sewer Services are always ready to talk through our service plans for grease traps as well as their installation or repair in commercial and private premises.
