The weather has always been a favourite topic of conversation in this country, but it’s getting more interesting now that we regularly get lashed by storms with names, torrential rain and even tornados.

Extreme flooding

This spring saw serious flooding in Sussex and the Midlands after monthly rainfall averages hit those areas in just a few hours. A man in his 80s even died in May after his car became submerged by flood waters in Walsall.

Floods occur when we get a sudden downpour of rain and the ground can’t soak it up quickly enough. The problem is made worse because of increasing amounts of land development. Rainwater runs off concrete and tarmac surfaces too quickly for drains to cope with, and if the water finds its way into a steep valley or fast running river, we can even see flash floods that can carry away cars and people.

Looking after your drains

Even with modern forecasting technology, the unstable weather patterns that hit the UK means we usually get little warning of extreme weather. That’s why it’s becoming so important to carry out regular maintenance to keep drains, gullies and culverts cleared of blockages and repaired.

Drains, gullies and culverts need regular maintenance because they can quickly become blocked:

  • Silting is an ongoing process as soil gets washed into the drain after every rainfall.
  • Tree root pressure and subsidence cave in drain walls, causing a blockage.
  • Foreign objects, such as fly-tipped rubbish and tree branches, can find their way into culverts and block drains.
