Not managed properly, septic tanks run the risk of causing pollution in their adjacent environment, so it’s important if your property has one, to check and maintain it properly.

The rules dealing with septic tanks

The General Binding Rules that came into effect in January 2020, ban septic tanks from being discharged into watercourses, requiring those that do be replaced or upgraded so that they drain into a drainage field over 50m from any well, spring or borehole used to supply water. If you aren’t able to comply with the rules, you need a permit from the Environment Agency.

How do you maintain a septic tank?

Making sure that your septic tank is managing waste properly means keeping it properly maintained. At Drain and Sewer Services, our teams empty, clean and install septic tanks to prevent faulty tanks from leading to bigger problems for the owner.

As registered waste handlers, we use our vacuuming and tanking equipment to empty septic tanks, removing the content to registered waste disposal sites. We also jet all lines into the tank and check the soakaway to clean debris so that the tank operates fully. When it’s time to replace your septic tank, we can advise on, and install, the best system for your needs.

Spotting a problem with your septic tank

Homeowners often become aware of a faulty septic tank when selling their homes and a survey picks up unseen issues, thus delaying the selling process until the fault is rectified. To avoid situations like this, keep your eyes open for:

  • A strong smell around your septic tank and drainage field
  • Waste backing up into household drains
  • Pools of standing water around the septic tank
  • Slow draining sinks and toilets

Pollution from a septic tank can lead to the owners being handed a substantial fine, so neglecting your septic tank really isn’t worth the risk.
