In July 2021 London hit the news when it suffered flash floods and while it may seem strange to be talking about floods during a prolonged period of hot, dry weather, with some parts of the country under hose pipe bans, summer is actually a common time for flash floods.

Why do we have flash floods in the summer?

July 2022 was the driest July since 1935 and for some eastern and southern parts of England, the driest July on record.

During these hot, dry periods, the ground dries out and becomes very hard. When this happens, rainwater takes longer to be absorbed into the ground. So, when we eventually have a heavy downpour, typically during a thunderstorm, instead of going into the ground it runs very quickly across the surface. There is also a risk of flooding from ruptured water mains, which can happen at any time.

At such times drainage systems can become overwhelmed, especially if drains and gutters are partially blocked with dust, dried mud and debris from vegetation, so that they can’t cope with the deluge.

With a heightened risk of the potential for flash flooding, now is the time to make sure your drainage systems are clear to cope with any downpours.

Maintain your drains, sewers and gutters while the sun shines

If you are a homeowner or are responsible for commercial or public buildings, we can clean your gutter and drains with a range of specialist equipment, including CCTV cameras to assesses blockages, so we can clear any problems with minimal disruption.

If you are responsible for a large property with a drainage system running through it, now is the perfect time to get your culverts unblocked, while your land is still dry and hard enough to take the weight of our 32-tonne tanker and suction unit.
