Highway drains, known as gullies, are situated at the edge of the road and take storm water from the road into the sewer system.

Highway drains are designed to:

  • remove surface water run-off from the road to help keep roads safe and minimise problems
  • prevent damage and make roads last longer through effective drainage
  • minimise surface water from the highway affecting properties or land

Litter, leaves and silt from rain water can block gullies, impeding the free flow of water throughout any surface water drainage system. A blocked gully can lead to serious flooding, accidents and damage to road and paved area surfaces.

Expert highway gully cleaning

Road gully cleaning is a crucial aspect of proper road maintenance and here at Drain and Sewer Services we work together with local authorities to keep highway gullies clear of blockages and debris.

Gully cleaning is usually carried out at night under traffic management and our ability to work 24/7 is a major benefit for clients because of reduced impact on road users. We are New Roads and Streetworks Act (NRSWA) accredited meaning operatives can carry out excavation, backfill and reinstatement using cold-lay bituminous materials as well as ensure safety to members of the public through use of road signs and traffic lights.

At Drain and Sewer Services we are fully equipped to vacuum out waste from both domestic and commercial gullies  and have a fleet of modern and highly effective specialist vehicles for highway drainage maintenance.

They include our newest addition to the fleet, Minibee, an RCV Ultra Vac tanker with a 2,220 gallon tank capacity and wash-down capability, who works alongside Bumblebee a RCV Ultra Cleaner Recycler. Bumblebee has a 3,200-gallon tank split between 1,200 gallons of fresh water and 2,000 gallons for debris, enabling removal of large volumes or wet and dry material, including stones and rubble, from highway culverts.

We offer a complete range of highway gully cleaning services, providing planned maintenance work and also reactive callouts when emergencies arise, for a range of public and private clients, not just the public highway network. We provide a complete service to not only clean gullies but also drains if the debris from the gullies has entered your drains.
